Out of the many forms of Classical Music in the World, Indian Music is one of the oldest systems. Indian Music had its origins in Vedas. The South Indian Music System had its origins from the Ancient Sangam Period.
Indian Music can be broadly classified as Carnatic and Hindustani Music. Ragas form the basis for both types of Music.
Raga or Ragam refers to Melodic Modes or Scales used in Indian Classical Music. Raga, a Sanskrit word, literally denotes “Colour” or “Mood”.
It is a series or sequence of five or more musical notes upon which a melody is built.
Raga basically prescribes a set of rules for creating a melody. It specifies how the sequence of musical notes should progress for movements up (Ascending, Arohana) and down (Descending, Avarohana), which notes should be used while moving up and which notes should be used while moving down etc. Raga can be termed as a Framework upon which the Melody is created in Indian Music.
With basic rules in place, it is possible to create numerous Ragas upon which melodies can be built. The total number of possibilities will run into lakhs. Out of which only a few thousand have names assigned to them. The remaining are either not pleasing or yet to be explored.
Out of these few thousands of Ragas, only a few hundred are in use today which is popular.
There are another few hundred which are rare and only a few compositions are available which are set in these Ragas.
Raga Dhwani attempts to cover all these Ragas. Around 1400 Ragas are covered in Raga Dhwani.
Extensive research has been done to identify these Ragas. There have been different versions of the same raga in use over the period of time.
All these versions are included in Raga Dhwani.
